From Chronic Hell to Holistic Health

For most of my life, I have suffered from chronic health conditions that the traditional Western medicine system failed to help me with. From chronic throat infections and migraines as a child, to depression and numerous auto-immune disorders, chronic pain, chronic fatigue, and adrenal issues as a teenager and adult, it was a long road of pain and desperation. At one point, the physical pain in my body was unbearable and had me in tears daily. Eventually, I took my health into my own hands and through years of research and experimentation, pieced together the underlying causes and found holistic solutions to support my healing.

Part of the reason the medical system fails us is that it doesn’t treat the conditions ‘whole’istically. There are always mental and emotional factors that have to be considered, in addition to what’s happening physically and environmentally. This is true holistic healing.

It is a build up, or layering if you will, of physical, environmental, mental, and emotional situations/traumas that eventually over-tax your body’s natural ability to heal and maintain homeostasis. Keep in mind that both ‘Big T’ traumas and ‘Little t’ traumas stress the system. So, all those small, seemingly insignificant events can add up. If you have a chronic health condition and are only getting partial results from your healing efforts, this is why.

Fortunately, just as the layers were created over the years, we can peel away the layers and much more quickly than the time it took them to form. But, it takes a holistic approach that addresses all aspects.

“Any disease could be healed in a matter of days, any disease, if distraction from it could occur and a different vibration dominate—and the healing time is about how much mix-up there is in all of that.” ~Abraham-Hicks

One of the principles I adhere to is aligning to well-being. As Abraham-Hicks reminds us, in any moment we are either allowing well-being or resisting it/now allowing it.

Aligning to Well-Being

What does this mean exactly? It means peeling away the layers of beliefs that hold you in patterns of dis-ease. It means healing the big T and little t traumas from your past that are still playing out in your body in the present. It means making physical and environmental adjustments to create an environment that supports healing. And from this clear/clearer place, your body naturally heals…and you can more easily align to natural state of joy and well-being.

Where to Start

Begin with awareness.

Notice your thoughts for one full day. What’s the first thought(s) you have when you wake up. What are you thinking about when you eat meals, are driving, before bed, and all the times in between. Notice of the majority are supportive/positive or unsupportive/negative. Also, notice if you replay the same scenarios over and over in your head – especially if it’s around an unpleasant situation. We have 60-90,000 thoughts a day – what are yours?

On another day, notice your emotions throughout the day. Emotions (energy in motion) are a fluid, informative guidance system – when we allow it. Notice how you respond/react when each emotion arises. Do you ignore them, deny them, push them away? Or do you allow each one to rise and fall and be fully processed?

Then, consider your environment. How many toxic substances, people, or situations are you exposed to on a daily basis? What foods are you eating and do you take quality vitamins and supplements to support your health? Do you have a daily movement practice? Do you breathe properly? (Deep, diaphragmatic breaths, for example.) Do you get adequate sleep?

It can seem like a lot at first, but if you begin to take small, incremental steps, you begin to shift the energies and habits, and create new habits that over time will support your body’s innate healing abilities. And of course, support along the way will get you there much faster.
